My God’s Supply | Phillippians 4:15-19

INTRODUCTION

Do you have any lack in your life? Do you ever think, “I wish I had that, I wish I had this.” Are you
struggling to make your ends meet? Are you running short of funds? Throughout Scripture, God
promises the faithful that He will provide for them. Story after story demonstrates God’s amazing
ability to provide for His children’s needs. However, God assumes full responsibility to supply our
needs only when we obey Him.

Today we are going to take a look at how God can meet all our needs.
Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your need according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 is one of the greatest and best-known verses in the Bible. Everyone has needs to be met
and this verse promises that God will meet our every need according to his glorious riches in Christ
Jesus.

Now the question is: Is this promise for every believer or is this promise only for certain believers? Is
this promise for every family or only for certain types of families?

We can find the answer in Philippians 4:15-16  15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the
early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one
church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only;  16 for even
when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need..
Philippians 4:15 AMP And you Philippians yourselves well know that in the early days
of the Gospel ministry, when I left Macedonia, no church (assembly) entered into
partnership with me and opened up [a debit and credit] account in giving and receiving
except you only.

Now v15 says they shared in the matter of giving. V19 says that these believers who gave had every need
met by God. So, if you and I want God to meet all our needs, then we might want to pattern our lives
after these Philippian believers. Give for missions again and again.

Let’s see how they gave: Philippians 4:10  10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you
renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.  They have cared all the time but they did not have an opportunity, now when they got an opportunity they have shown it.
You see Paul received a financial gift from this church and now he is thanking them for it.

I. How God sees our giving?

1. Our giving is compared as an investment to God.

Philippians 4:17 Paul looked upon their gift as an investment that would earn them spiritual
dividends. Philippians 4:17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be
credited to your account. The more you give to the kingdom, the more God is going to give to you.
This is a Bible principle. He compares their gift to an investment, it is also eternal investment.
Remember no one can out give God.

2. Our giving is compared as an acceptable sacrifice to God.

Philippians 4:18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply
supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts (Kind & Cash) you
sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

This is the language of the OT temple or the tabernacle, sweet smelling savor. God recognizes our
gifts of kind, offerings, tithes, and mission funds. What we give is an odour of a sweet smell to God.
So, we have a beautiful picture of a believer’s giving: It is beautiful like sweet smelling investment that’s
satisfying to God.

II. The reason for our giving?

Concern for others.

Philippians 4:10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for
me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.

You and I are never going to give to missions if we don’t have a concern for others. If we as a church do
not have a concern we will overlook every opportunity to give.

ILLUSTRATION

Have you ever gone into a store and discovered some organization set up a fund-raising table in the
hope of catching people on the way out. Now suppose as you enter you notice it is a fundraiser for
some organization you do not particularly care to support. Thirty minutes later when it is time for you
to leave what happens? You walk out like you have never even see the table.

Did you all of a sudden go blind while walking down the entrance? No! We do not see the fundraising
table because we have no concern for what that worldly organization does.

Now, there are so many Christians and churches that have no concern for others. Even in the NT times
no church or believers participated in give other than the Philippians. Philippians 4:15-
16 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the
gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of
giving and receiving, except you only;  16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent
me aid more than once when I was in need.

This church was concerned and they gave for Missions. What should we be concerned about? We
should be concerned about what Jesus was concerned about? The lost, people without Jesus, reach
them with the love of Jesus.

Luke 19:10 For the son of man came to seek and to save what was lost.
Luke 4:18-19  18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim
good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and
recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,  19 to proclaim the year of the
Lord’s favor.”

This is what we do at RACE and City Harvest. Jesus came to establish His kingdom, seeking the lost.
We heard about trafficked victims today and we should be concerned to rescue, care, and reintegrate
these kids into the society with the love of God. But when we as Christians or we as churches do not
take the opportunity to support missions what we are saying is we have no concern for those who are
lost.

III. Promises for the giving believer

1. God has promised to supply us.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your need according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus.

Remember the Source of our supply: “My God.” It is natural that we go through tough times. The
economy change, we lose job, the planned investment fails but we have hope. The reason we have hope
is because of God. The economy maybe bad, we may not have anything but God can provide all our
needs. Can God provide? Sure He can!

Abraham was the first one to say, “God will provide.” Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My
son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them
together. God did provide and Abraham called the name of that place – Jehovah Jireh.

What is the source? My God is the source of our supply. When God is our supply, we are taking about a
fountain never runs dry, a bank that will never fail. He has always provided, and always will. His
provision was in place before Abraham obeyed it or prayed and asked for it!

God not only supplies our financial needs, there is a whole lot of blessings that we get when we give to
God.

a. God bestows us his kindness.

Romans 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and
patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

b. God bestows us his grace.

Ephesians 1:7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in
accordance with the riches of God’s grace.

c. God bestows his riches in glory.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your need according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus. So we have a goodness account, grace account, and glory account. How many of you have experienced
this from God? And see the source of all these riches is Phil. 4:19 “My God”.
Who is this God? Philippians 4:20 To our God and father be glory forever and ever.
Amen. My God is my Father and guess what my father has in his heart, his child, his
children. He is committed to take care of His child no matter what!

2. God supplies all our needs.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your need according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus. The Bible says all your need not all your greed.

We are all greedy isn’t it? When we buy something, something else better comes and we need that. We
have a phone, then another phone comes with a better software, good resolution, better camera, better
screen space and then we need it.

Let’s be honest: We all get our salaries and it is not enough. Then we get a raise and spend it and then
with the balance buy something again that salary is not enough. Then we see that we have too much of
the month left at the end of the money. We ask, “When is the next salary date? When is the next hike?
Oh that company gives better salary.” This is man’s greed.

Remember God does not meet our greed, only need. For our needs he does not have limit nor is it
rationed, he meets “all” our needs”!

Here is the good news, if you have financial needs, if you remain faithful to God, God will remain
faithful to you. Psalm 37:25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the
righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

God is not only faithful just for your financial needs, he meets our emotional needs. He gives us peace,
helps us overcome worry and anxiety. He fills every void, helps in trouble. God also meets our spiritual
needs. When we give importance to God in every aspect of our life he meets all our needs. Amen!

3. God supplies us according to his riches.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your need according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus. It is according to His riches in glory, not out of his riches.

ILLUSTRATION

Can you imagine you see a man about to be hit by a car, you grab him and save his life, he falls down
and when you see his face, it’s Nandan Nilekani. He’s so thankful, reaches into his wallet, and pulls out
Rs. 500/- What? If he gave that that’s not giving according to his riches, but simply out of!

But imagine instead he pulls out a blank check and signs it, telling you to go home and add up all your
needs, only needs: past debts and current needs—just fill in the amount! Now that’s giving according
to his riches!

God’s provision is an endless, abundant supply for our day-to-day needs!

IV. How can I receive my God’s supply?

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your need according to the riches of his glory
in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 KJV But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in
glory by Christ Jesus.

This verse starts with a conjunction: “But, and.” Most people would quote this verse beginning with
“My God” rather than “but or and”…which connects it to all that Paul said before leading up to it. My
supply is connected to my giving.

Give and it shall be given to you. Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good
measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.
For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

This word is not written to the world, this is not for everyone, not written to the selfish, but to the
sacrificial…those Christians involved in meeting the needs of others sacrificially, those that get behind a
cause and back it all the way giving again and again, those that have a purpose bigger than themselves!

So, don’t claim this promise if you are not obeying God’s commands in giving sacrificially – Yes, in
offering, tithes, and also missions. We need to do more than our offerings and tithes. Get involved in
missions, maybe secretly giving to the needy.

Luke 12:32-34  32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give
you the kingdom. (God is pleased to give you His Kingdom)  33 Sell your possessions and
give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in
heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.  34 For where
your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

As much God says, “I am pleased to give to you my kingdom, so do the same.” Make it your pleasure to
give too. We know the promise; he will give more than you can give him; however, out motive should
not be to receive.

Never think that if you are financially doing well but not tithing, that God’s judgment is not upon you.
The accurate way to tell is that God will judge the non-givers in some way, even if not financial at all!
See the book of Haggai 1:6 You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but
never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not
warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” No place in the
scripture God promises to meet the needs of a believer who is not following God’s commands in
giving!

We really care about you. We want you to receive the reward of obedience. God doesn’t need your
money. City Harvest doesn’t need your money. The church’s provider is God, God shall supply our
needs but when you partner God supplies your needs as well. Amen.

CONCLUSION

Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my
house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the
floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough
to store it.

Friends…we need God, Who will provide! I believe God wants us to do great missions in the days to
come. There are lots of wonderful things that we can do for the Lord together. Could you be used of
God to help provide? Surely! But the main reason to do so is for obedience and to have God’s blessing
upon you!
