Empowered For Purpose | Acts 2:14-47

August 17, 2013

Topic: Holy Spirit

Book: Acts

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if heaven touched earth?  What would happen if God’s very presence, power, and purpose were poured out in our homes and church when we are gathered in prayer?

That’s exactly what happened on the day of Pentecost.

Pentecost is the fulfilment of God’s promise. It is the moment when heaven intersects earth freshly and powerfully through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This moment did not come out of nowhere. Jesus had been preparing His disciples, speaking to them of the Kingdom of God, promising them the Spirit, and commissioning them to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.

And now, in Acts 2, the Spirit descends, just as the prophets had foretold and the church is born. Empowered. Transformed. Sent.

Open your Bibles to Acts 2. We have looked at Acts 1:1-13 in our previous sermon – Empowered for Missions.

In this sermon, we are going to explore Acts 2 under 3 themes:

  • The Prophecy of Pentecost, Acts 2:14-21: What God promised and fulfilled.
  • The Preaching of Pentecost, Acts 2:22-40: Who Jesus really is and why that changes everything.
  • The Purpose of Pentecost, Acts 2:41-47: What a Spirit-filled church looks.

Acts 2

PROPHESY OF PENTECOST – ACTS 2:14-21

Peter interprets what’s happened from Joel chapter 2.

Acts 2:14-16

14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

Pentecost is extraordinary: Outpouring of the Spirit, the rushing of the wind, the tongues of fire is the fulfilment of the New Covenant promises of God. Peter quotes from Joel and that they have arrived in the new moment. This is the new day that the prophets were talking about. This fulfils what Joel said.

Joel 2:28-29

Acts 2:16-18

28“And afterward (meant last days, Joel 3:1), I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

29Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

30I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,

32And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord (YAHWEH) will be saved;

16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

19I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below,

21And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Afterward/in the last days, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Transcends gender barrier.

Young men will see visions and old men will dream dreams. Transcends age barrier.

Who in the OT had dreams and visions, the prophets? These were associated with prophets in the Bible. And then Peter adds in another line that’s not even there in Joel: “And they will prophesy.” This is driving home the point that the same Spirit who empowered the prophets is the same Spirit who now empowers the church to declare the Word of the Lord; the good news of the gospel, the good news of Christ to the ends of the earth.

Even on my servants, both men and women. We see Mary as a servant in Luke 1 when the Spirit comes on her and Jesus to be conceived inside of her. She is also called the handmaiden of the Lord; Lk 1:38. She is there on the day of Pentecost. This is her second experience in Pentecost. She becomes the model for the church on the day of Pentecost. God pours out His Spirit on humble people who are willing to be used by God.

I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below. There are wonders in heaven and signs on the earth. Not everything that Joel spoke of has yet happened, but it is a time of fulfilment.

After quoting Joel Luke speaks of Jesus from v22

Acts 2:22

Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.

You had the sign at Jesus’ death where the sun was turned into darkness and so on.

The Prophecy of Pentecost: What happened?

  • Joel’s prophecy is fulfilled, the Spirit is poured on all flesh.
  • God uses ordinary people, men and women, young and old to speak his word.

Later Acts picks up Joel again in v39.

Acts 2:39

The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.

Application: Have you received this Spirit?

Transition: Now that we have seen the prophesy fulfilled, let’s see how Peter proclaims Christ.

PREACHING OF PENTECOST – ACTS 2:22-40

Acts 2:22-24

22“Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

This is one of the great Messianic expositions in the NT on the basis of the resurrection. Jesus was crucified as a would be Messiah, everyone thought that he was a messianic pretender. Do you remember the question by the High Priest: Are you the Messiah? Nailed above his head, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” The King of the Jews hung on a cross, mocked and died. They thought Jesus was a scam. But the resurrection proved who Jesus really was, the Messiah, the King, the Lord. That is what Peter is talking here – He is the resurrected Messiah.

Peter in his preaching, explains Jesus as Lord and also links together two texts from Psalms:

Acts 2:25-34

25David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.

Because he is at my right hand,

I will not be shaken.

26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;

my body also will rest in hope,

27because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,

you will not let your holy one see decay.

28You have made known to me the paths of life;

you will fill me with joy in your presence.’ (Ps. 16:8-9)

29“Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:

“Sit at my right hand

35until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet.”’ (Ps. 110:1)

36“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

What resurrection actually means:

V27, 29, 30-31.

The resurrection means a new physicality, a body. Jesus’ body did not corrupt, instead, it was transformed, and he is alive with the same body but transformed into a non-corruptible physicality. This is the Christian hope, a bodily resurrection.

V34 _ Jesus is raised from the dead. Therefore, he is the Messiah. He is enthroned as the one who shares the very name and throne of God, the Lord, Kurios. He is the YAHWEH.

Paul talks about it in Romans:

Romans 1:2-4

2the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, 4and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God (Messianic title) in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Terms to describe Jesus:

  • Jesus of Nazareth v22.
  • Approved by God, v22.
  • Receiver of the Holy Spirit, v33.
  • Giver of the Holy Spirit, v33.
  • Jesus is both Lord and Messiah, v36
  • The Lord is at the Father’s right hand. Acts 2:25
  • God has raised Jesus to life; v32

The preaching of Pentecost is:

  • Jesus is Lord: Preaching of Jesus as the Lord, the King, the Messiah.
  • Forgiveness of sins: Repent & to be Baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.
  • Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

This is the first Christian sermon.

Repent – Evokes the language of the OT prophets asking Israel to turn back to God. So, Peter is calling them to turn to God. When Gentiles where converting to Judaism, they would be immersed and baptized in water. So when the Gentiles came to the temple they would just get through the water as a ceremonial cleansing. But when Peter is calling for repentance and baptism, this is not a regular ceremonial cleansing. This is a kind of repentance, turning to God This is a special kind of turning where you are going to turn your whole life over to God. He is inviting them to come to God on the same terms as Gentiles. Which is to say that none of us can simply depend on our ancestor for salvation.

Application: For people who were raised in a Christian home, we cannot just depend on our parent’s faith. We cannot depend on our grandparent’s faith. It is good that they have faith in Jesus and has brought you up in the word but you need to come to God. All of us will have to come to God with faith in Christ. All of us will have to trust in Christ. Call for Baptism.

Therefore: Calling on the Lord’s name = Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

This question – What Shall we do to be saved? This question is asked in Luke. Remember the rich ruler in Luke 18. He said, “What must I do to have eternal life?” Jesus said, “Sell everything that you have and give it to the poor.” Jesus also said this to his disciples in 12:33; 14:33. Jesus is talking about surrendering your resources for the good of the kingdom. If you are really turning to God, then everything. You want to devote your life for God’s purposes.

Here, Peter says, “Repent and be baptized,” When they asked what they must do.

In Acts 16, the Philippian jailer says, “What must we do to be saved?” Paul says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.”

In each case the answer is somewhat different but they are all linked together. Because if we really believe in Jesus we really stake everything we are and have on Jesus, why would we want to keep anything for ourselves?

Jesus saves us from sin.

Jesus saves us from penalty of sin.

He saves us from our rebellion.

He brings us into a relationship with himself.

We go from being enemies of God to being on God’s side.

We want to serve God, we want to please God.

Peter quotes from Joel: Joel 2:21 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

What does it mean: ‘Anyone who call on the name of the Lord will be saved?”

  • Now is the day of salvation.
  • Now is the day of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
  • Now is the era of the prophetic empowerment. We are empowered as the end-time prophets of Christ.

What is end-time prophetic empowerment?

  • It is preaching the word of the Lord. OT & NT, the prophetic message.
  • It is speaking the Gospel. In the book of Acts, the believers are carrying forth the gospel in the power of the Lord. That is the word of the Lord.
  • It is prophetic word. We do have people prophesying in the book of acts as the word of the Lord.

Through all these means, Spirit of God is speaking Christ to the people. God touches the hearts of people through preaching the word, speaking the gospel, prophetic word. All believers can embrace that power and expect God to speak through us to reach people with good news of Christ. It is the era where whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

And so Peter has called on the people to repent, but in their repentance it went so deep that it touched every aspect of their lives. When Jesus Christ becomes Lord of our life, when we are really filled with the power of His Spirit, we will proclaim His message to other people, and we will serve one another and care about one another’s needs.

THE PURPOSE OF PENTECOST – ACTS 2:41-47

What is the result of Spirit empowering God’s people?

a. Effective Evangelism; 2:41

Acts 2:41

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Acts 2:47

And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

b. People Participated in Prayer & Study of the Word (teaching of the apostles).

Acts 2:42

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

We have this word given to us. The message of both the OT and NT which was been tested through time and proved becomes our measuring rod. That will keep us on track on our relationship with God. Just like they got apostolic teaching, we can get the apostolic teaching by studying the Bible.

c. Witness by Wonders & Signs: The Gifts & Fruit of the Spirit.

Acts 2:43

Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.

The sings that was performed by Jesus (Acts 2:22), now performed by the church; Acts 3.

You not only have the gifts but you also have fruit. Their lives were transformed

e. Effective Community Life.

The transformation in the community by how they treat one another

Acts 2:44-47a

42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together (covenant fellowship) with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

The way the community lives; 2:47

United as one.

Praying together.

Eating together.

Shared possessions. They were willing to sacrifice for one another. Valued people more than possessions. They invested in people, investing in things that matter to God and by the time you come to acts 4 there were no needy persons among them.

Acts 4:34

…that there were no needy persons among them.

There was no needy person among them. This reminds Deuteronomy 15, the Jubilee year.

Deuteronomy 15:4

However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you,

They are behaving as people who are living what God always promised them. The story of the Pentecost is the rushing, mighty wind filling the house and the fire upon the disciples. The disciples are now prophesying and the spiritual and physical needs of the people are met. It is a counter temple statement. This is like the scene in Isaiah 6 when the glory of the Lord fills the house. Now it is happening to the NT church and it is equipping them to be the means of God’s glory going out in the world.

When the church goes out into the world bearing Christ in the power of the Spirit, this is the sign to the world already of that filling, of that flooding of the glory of God of which Isaiah and Habakkuk had spoken. The earth shall be full of the glory of God, as the waters cover the sea. The life and the witness and mission of the church of the church is the sign already of how that happens, that wherever the people of God are, there in that place, there in Bangalore, there in South Africa, there in Delhi, there is already Christ in you the hope of that glory.

The church is a counter temple movement and the church is the movement which hails Jesus as Lord, and so runs into trouble with other people who think that they are running the show.

CONCLUSION

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost was not a one-time spiritual event but the beginning of a new way of living — a Spirit-filled, Christ-cantered, purpose-driven life. Acts 2 reminds us that the Holy Spirit doesn’t just empower us for personal experiences; He transforms us to build the church, reach the world, and reflect Christ daily.
